Death And The Grave

"Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful...The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception." (3:185)

"Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!" (4:78)

"And spend of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says; "My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakat) of my wealth and be among the righteous.

And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do." (63:10-11)

"If you could see when the wrongdoers taste the pangs of death and the angels stretch their hands out, [saying], 'Deliver up you souls. This day you will be awarded a degrading punishment.'" [6:93]

Umm Salamah reported: Allah's messenger entered upon Abu Salamah [i.e., his corpse], whose eyes were wide open. The Prophet closed the lids and then said, ‘When the ruh is taken out, the eyesight follows it [i.e., watches it ascend].’ [Muslim & Ahmed]

Abu Hurairah narrated that the messenger of Allah said: When the soul of a believer comes out [of its body], two angels receive it and rise with it towards the heavens, whereupon the inhabitants of the heavens say…”A good soul has come from the earth. Allah has blessed you and the body which you used to occupy.” [Muslim]

Every soul will taste death [3:185]

“And the agony of death comes, in truth; that is what you wished to avoid”. [50:19]

Aishah (radhiAllahu ‘anha) related: [On the occasion of his approaching death], Allah’s messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a small vessel of water placed before him. He began to dip his hands in the water, and wiping his face with them…He said: There is none worthy of worship except Allah. Indeed death brings with it agonies! Then he raised his hand up and kept repeating, ‘In the most exalted company’ until his soul was taken and his hand fell limp. [Bukhari]

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him:…What did you used to say about this man, Muhammad? He will say: I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has changed for you a place in Paradise instead of it.’…

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) added, “The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, ‘I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say!

… It will be said to him, ‘neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Qur’an).’…Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns.” [Sahee: Al-Bukhaaree (2/422), Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Daud, an-Nasaa’e: from Anas (ra)]

“When any of you completes the last tashahhud of his prayer, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying…

‘O Allah, verily I seek refuge in you from the punishment of the Hellfire and the torment of the grave; from the fitnah of life and of death; and from the evil fitnah of the false messiah. [Muslim]

“Forgiveness is not for those who continue to do evil deeds up until when death comes to one of them [and] he says, ‘Truly, I repent now!’” [4:18]
